Use these strategies to navigate challenging speaking circumstances in daily life:

  • You have the right to take as much time as you need when speaking; do not feel compelled to speak at someone else's rate.
  • You have the right to request whatever you want.
  • Be open about your stammer – it takes the pressure off. Don’t apologize when you stammer, but rather say something like: “By the way, I stammer sometimes, so please give me a little more time”
  • If someone reacts negatively to your stammer, that is their problem and not yours -Do not burden yourself with extra worry.
